Priory of St Mary in the meadow (Beeston Priory)

I'm very rubbish at finding information. I often go visiting places without doing any research. I should really because for instance, Beeston Priory is very old and it must have a lot of interesting history and it would be nice to know it before hand. All the same, it's also nice to have a delightful discovery - sort of a serendipity.

I knew since I first saw the priory in the distance that I would love it. There was something gentle and magical about the place. From those horses to the lovely scenery surrounding it and the atmosphere which was serene and dreamy.

What makes this place different from other priory I have been to is the size and the surroundings. It's small, half hidden. You don't realise it's there and then all of a sudden it's just right there. I don't know if it will get busier in the summer or during school holiday but in that April afternoon - I had the place all by myself.

It was great. I had little Soba in the rucksack on my shoulders and he too was thoroughly enjoying it. He didn't meow, didn't complain. He was taking it all in. I took tons of photographs and I took time to explore this and that corner - it was wonderful.

I found out later (always later) that the priory is actually called, Priory of St. Mary in the meadow - isn't it sweet? I've always known it by the geographical name as Beeston Priory in Beeston Regis a little town or village I'm not sure next to Sheringham which is a popular seaside town.
As we all know that all the priory in England had been closed by Henry VIII when he wanted to break away from Rome in order to remarry to Anne Boleyn. It's such a sad ending for such magnificent buildings but it's taught me that nothing lasts forever.  Priory of St. Mary in the meadow was built in 1216 and that makes it's 810 years old 😶 I can't help to imagine that it must be a very beautiful priory situated in a very charming landscape surrounded by sweet meadow and with the Beeston bump (the hill you see in the picture) in the distance. Please find more information for the priory in the link below.

At home that night I looked through the photographs and videos I took and I couldn't help but dreaming about the place. What it would be like in the twilight? and at night time? Would the owl come and sit by the window and deer come sniffing at the ground? Foxes? badgers? Those two horses? what would they be doing? Would the farmer come and put them in the stable?  And what about the fairies? Would they come and gather together on the full moon night? or in the light of the fireflies?  It's such a sweet, magical place that makes my imagination go wild and its memory lingers in my thoughts.
