Living with Soba
Soba had his first walk in the back garden yesterday. I must say it was a big step for such a small kitten. It wasn't easy for him but he was very brave because after all he is only a tiny kitten in the big world. He jumped in the box which I use as washing basket a couple times almost as if everything was overwhelmed for him. And the look on his face! I think he had just realised how big, noisy and strange the world was - he is only 3.5 months old and has spent majority of his life inside a tiny house! Eventually, he jumped out of the box and started to explore the lawn gingerly. But I know it was a big leap for him. Swopping from a dog owner to a cat owner isn't easy but Snoopy has taught me many things I only realise once he's gone. In that many things include unconditional love and patient which now I'm practising on Soba.
But Soba is great. He has only been in my life for just over a month and it is almost as if he had been here forever. I can't believe how brilliant he is and how lucky I am to have him.
This past month I watch him grow and adapt - how he explores the house, finds his favourite space to sit or nap and eventually finds his own bedroom in the understairs cupboard. How he plays with his toys and his tunnel, climbs his cat towers and uses the cat scratcher for his claws. How he reacts when I take him in the cat rucksack to go for a walk or for a drive in the car. How well he adapts to the harness and the lead. He is brilliant. But he is still a kitten - he plays with me and my hands and legs are now full of scratches ð He has climbed on the furniture which he shouldn't and he has started to sniff at my food and tried to lick my matcha tea latte. He is affectionate but independent. At night he comes to bed with me, we play for 10 minutes and when we're both settled he will quietly go to his bedroom. But as soon as he hears me move around in bed he will come up - sometime wanting to play again. He jumps onto bed and rubs his fluffy body against my face - purring and bites my hands. So we play for another 10 minutes - he will then be happy and will be settled again. We've learnt to get to know each other. He is more of my housemate than my pet. When I go to work especially on my night shifts - he doesn't need a pet sitter. He is able to stay at home. I leave the binds opened, make sure the house is nice and warm, plenty of food and water to drink. I clean and change wood pallet in his litter trays. I leave soft lights on and put Classic FM on for him. An elderly couple told me once I needed to talk to him - they said just tell him what you are doing and what you want him to do. So I talk to Soba a lot and I think he understands.
