Temple of Dawn is Bangkok's most iconic place. It's always been since the old time. Since I was little I've always heard the stories of how special this place is - to Thai people and especially to us - Bangkokers. To be honest, I hate the name Bangkok - it sounds so ugly. Bangkok's real name is Krungthep which means the city of angels and that is shorts for its official name which is much, much longer - it could be the capital city with the longest name.

วัดอรุณเป็นสถานที่ที่เป็นสัญญาลักษณ์ของกรุงเทพฯมาตั้งแต่นมนานกาเล ตั้งแต่เด็กๆ ฉันก็ได้ยินเรื่องเล่าเกี่ยวกับวัดอรุณไม่รู้ตั้งกี่เรื่อง วัดอรุณจึงเป็นสถานที่พิเศษสำหรับชาวกรุงเทพฯ จริงๆ ฉันไม่ชอบคนต่างชาติเรียกกรุงเทพฯว่าแบ๊งค๊อคเลย ฟังดูก็ไม่เพราะ กรุงเทพฯ เป็นเมืองของเทวดา เพราะจะตาย แถมชื่อจริงๆ ยังยาวกว่านี้และเข้าใจว่ากรุงเทพมหานคร อมรรัตนโกสินทร์ ฯลฯ เป็นเมืองหลวงที่มีชื่อยาวที่สุดในโลกด้วยซ้ำ

Stories I heard about Temple of Dawn are about the giants who quarrelled and had a fight with the the Temple of Reclining Buddha's giants from time to time. I suppose you can call it a legend. I used to get scared of these giants when I was a child I felt like they were huge then. Also, story about how Temple of Dawn had its name - not sure how it goes exactly. But I was told that people who travelled to Bangkok by boats in the old days called it that as their boats reached Temple of dawn at dawn when the sun was rising. They said it was the most beautiful sight to see. And I believe them. The temple of dawn is most beautiful in any light anyway.

เรื่องราวที่ได้ยินมาตั้งแต่ยังเด็กเกี่ยวกับวัดอรุณก็คือยักษ์วัดแจ้ง (วันอรุณ) กับยักษ์วัดโพธิ์ (วัดพระนอน) ชอบตีกัน เรียกว่าเป็นตำนานแล้วกัน แต่ตอนเด็กๆ ฉันก็กลัวยักษ์พวกนี้ซะไม่มี อีกเรื่องคือที่มาที่ไปของชื่อวัดอรุณ ว่ากันว่าได้มาจากพวกคนที่เดินทางมากรุงเทพฯ โดยเรือ และเห็นภาพวัดอรุณในยามพระอาทิตย๋ขึ้น ต่างก็เล่าขานกันว่าเป็นภาพที่สวยที่สุด เชื่อจริงๆ นะ เพราะวัดอรุณสวยที่สุดไม่ว่าในแสงไหนๆ อยู่แล้ว
When I was a teenager, I remember climbing to the top of the pagoda (it was allowed then) and saw a magnificent view. It's something I won't be able to do it now even if I was allowed. I'm glad I did it then. I think I've developed vertigo as I get older - I know - what a shame!

ตอนเป็นวัยรุ่นฉันเคยปีนขึ้นไปจนสุดยอดเจดีย์ (ตอนนั้นเขายังอนุญาติให้ปีนขึ้นไป) และเห็นวิวกรุงเทพฯสวยงามมาก เป็นสิ่งที่ตอนนี้ทำไม่ได้แล้วถึงเขาจะอนุญาติ ก็เลยรู้สึกดีที่ได้ทำไปแล้วในตอนนั้น ตอนนี้เริ่มกลัวความสูง น่าเสียดาย

The Temple of Dawn is still very special to me, even more so, now that I come as a visitor. Apart from the temple itself, I love that people from over the world who come to visit share the same appreciation for the place. I love those beautiful Chinese tourists who dressed up in Thai traditional costume - dashing around, get their photographs taken. They are so beautiful and they make the atmosphere more beautiful and interesting. 

วัดอรุณยังคงเป็นสถานที่พิเศษสำหรับฉัน ยิ่งพิเศษขึ้นด้วยซ้ำเพราะตอนนี้ฉันไม่ได้อยู่ในกรุงเทพฯแล้ว นอกจากตัววัดแล้วฉันก็ยังชอบที่นักท่องเที่ยวมาจากทั่วโลกต่างก็มีความประทับใจในสถานที่เช้นกัน ฉันชอบบรรดานักท่องเที่ยวชาวจีนที่แต่งตัวชุดไทย เดินเนิบๆนาบๆ  ถ่ายรูป ดูสวยจริงๆ ทำให้สถานที่ดูสวยงามและน่าสนใจยิ่งขึ้น
